A few weeks ago I was “chosen” to receive a free box of Mary Kay goodies to try, play with, and review. This could not have been more up my alley! After waiting patiently (ha!) for the box to arrive, it finally showed up on Friday after work. Needless to say, I was ready to rock ‘n roll with my full-sized samples bright and early Saturday morning.
The #MKGlamBox came with full-sized samples for me to try. Included in this box with links and prices for products:
I prepped my face with my normal products, which include Physician’s Formula CC+ cream in light and Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation in 020. I also added on Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray eyelid and under eye primer. These items are the only ones added into my Mary Kay routine today. All other makeup products are c/o Mary Kay for an honest review.
I first applied the cream eye shadow in Apricot Twist. I’m not normally a fan of cream shadows because I find that they crease and look greasy after a while. However, with the Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray base, the cream went on smoothly.
I absolutely loved the Apricot Twist color. It reminded me of the CoverGirl champagne color I used to wear. I think this color would be flattering on so many skin types. I also liked the applicator brush, which did not lose any bristles, even after I rinsed the leftover color out with soap and water.
The shadow wasn’t too bright or shiny. It wasn’t glittery or ostentatious, which was important on a Saturday spent running errands and at the park. It was just enough shimmer to provide a little “somethin’-somethin'” for my daytime look.
The next step of my makeup was to apply the gel liner. I was glad that the product came with its own expandable applicator brush. I’m very familiar with gel liner, as I currently use the Loreal version. The Mary Kay brand went on smoothly and stayed put all day, even after taking a late afternoon siesta with my little guy. The brush was easily washed with soap and water. Overall I really liked this gel, but it was a little too dark for a day time look. I would definitely wear this in a brown color during the day, though, and save the midnight black color for a date night!
After applying the gel liner I was super excited to put on the mascara. Mascara has always been my “go-to” item that I wear every day. Finding the perfect mascara has also been my Holy Grail recently, as nothing has really compared to my absolute favorite brand, Benefit’s They’re Real. My biggest problem with Benefit’s brand, though, has been the difficulty in getting it off in the evening. After scrubbing my face and then also using eye makeup remover, I still wake up in the morning with raccoon eyes. So, as you can see, I was eager to try this Mary Kay Lash Love mascara.
The Lash Love mascara brush reminded me a lot of Benefit’s They’re Real, so this was a good sign! According to the Mary Kay Lash Love mascara product page, this mascara is…
Love your lashes with the mascara that defines, defends and delivers four times the volume while looking naturally flawless, soft and healthy. The flexible, sculpted brush separates and coats lashes.
- Flake-, Smudge- and clump-resistant.
- Mary Kay® Panthenol-Pro Complex™ helps condition lashes and helps defend against breakage.
- Ophthalmologist-tested and suitable for contact lens wearers.
- Water-resistant formula.
While applying the Lash Love product I noticed that it clumped very easily. I kept trying to separate my lashes by wiggling the brush as I applied, but the mascara appeared sticky and just made my lashes more clumped together. And, to be honest, after applying the mascara I really thought it looked awful. However, in looking at the above pictures and also talking to my husband, it apparently looked like I had falsies on. That was definitely a surprising compliment from a man who normally does not notice those types of things! So, I’m definitely giving the Lash Love product a second chance and will keep you all updated. I will say, though, that my lashes feel super soft and the product itself was really easy to get off after washing my face last night. It also stayed in place during my aforementioned siesta with no smudging or running!
While I did not apply the blush yesterday, I did notice how closely it reminds me of my current blush obsession by Nars. The Nars blush appears to have more gold coloring than the Mary Kay version. I will definitely keep you posted as I use the blush and compare it to the Nars version.
Rather than use the blush yesterday, I decided to go with some bronzer. I loved that Mary Kay sent a powder brush with this kit. I usually use the same brush for bronzer, blush, and loose powder and just clean with a dry towel in between uses. The brush loaded up the bronzer nicely and I applied the product to the hollows of my cheeks, almost directly out and in an upward-swooping motion from the corners of my mouth to my temples. I was impressed with how well this bronzer blended and did not leave a nasty orange streak across my face.
It was just enough to give my cheeks a slight hint of coloring and contoured my face ever so slightly. I loved it!
Second only to the mascara, I was definitely eager to try the translucent powder. I’ve been hooked since receiving a sample of HD Makeup setting powder from Sephora. However, I’ve noticed that the HD version has a bit of shimmer and, with an already slightly-oily complexion, I don’t often get the matte finish I prefer. I again used the powder brush and loaded it with powder before applying it just along my forehead, nose, and chin. I then blended the bronzer again with the brush, but did not add anymore powder beforehand.
I loved how this powder gave me a matte finish and, in fact, it stayed put without getting shiny or greasy. It’s definitely got staying power and felt weightless! I’m in love for sure!
To top off the look I finished with the NouriShine Plus lip gloss in Mango Tango. I honestly would not have chosen this color on my own, as it has a very orangey tint. I’m more of a pinks girl, myself, but with orange being on trend this year, I may have a chance to put this gloss to good use. The gloss definitely nourished my lips, as I didn’t have to reapply anything, even my regular Burt’s Bee’s, throughout the day. My lips, even now, feel soft. The color faded throughout the day but the softness lasted all day.
Overall I am extremely impressed with my Mary Kay products. The eye cream, liner, mascara, and powder lasted through a day at the park and an afternoon nap with my little guy. The makeup went on smoothly, didn’t crease or show shine, and came off so easily with my regular face wash and warm water. I’m most impressed with the cream eye color and the translucent loose powder, both of which are products I will most certainly purchase in the future. Now… if only I knew a Mary Kay representative!
I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. The opinions are my own.
